How it is calculated, with your numbers
- Full tank range
range = tank / cons × 10017 / 5.5 × 100 = 309 km - Distance until the reserve
toreserve = (tank − reserve) / cons × 100(17 − 3) / 5.5 × 100 = 255 km
Working uses the metric units the formula is written in.
- tank Tank capacity (L)
- reserve Reserve (included in the tank figure) (L)
- cons Fuel consumption (L/100 km)
- range Full tank range
- toreserve Distance until the reserve
What it means
Range is the fuel you carry divided by what you use per distance. Consumption on a big twin changes a lot with speed: drag rises with the square of speed, so 80 mph can use noticeably more than 65 mph, and a passenger, luggage or a headwind adds more. Plan fuel stops on the distance to reserve, not the full-tank figure.
Measure consumption by filling to the brim, riding, and refilling to the brim: litres added divided by kilometres times 100, or miles divided by US gallons for mpg.
Assumptions and limits
- Steady consumption over the whole tank.
- Some fuel at the bottom of the tank cannot be picked up by the pump.
Sources
- Range = usable fuel / consumption. US gallon = 3.785 L.
